The Congress of Mayors approved this Thursday the proposal presented by the Executive Power to extend for four months, starting in June, the Jornales Solidarios job opportunity program, which will benefit some 10,000 people.

Those chosen will be designated through a lottery, based on certain age categories and respecting the requirements. From the draw there will also be a list of substitutions or priority, in the event that there are withdrawals from the program.

The initiative, aimed at those who are currently unemployed and in a vulnerable situation, will be paid for 80% by the Executive Power, which will grant some US$10 million, while the remaining 20% will be in charge of the municipalities.

President Luis Lacalle Pou celebrated the decision during his visit to Durazno: “Today there was a very good meeting with the Congress of Mayors, this policy will continue for four months.”

“What we all aspire to is that people by their own means can undertake, work and lead a decent life with their family,” he added.

The program had previously been extended until next May 31, as resolved by a unanimous vote of the Congress of Mayors, as a result of “positive impacts” in terms of “implementation as well as results,” the leaders argued in the statement.

After the resolution of this Thursday, the plan will be extended until October.
