The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, conveyed this Thursday to the High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations Organization (UN), the Chilean Michelle Bachelet, Spain’s commitment to strengthen ties between countries and favor the defense of those Rights.
“Spain wants to contribute to building bridges and strengthening a climate of trust between States and between regional groups,” Sánchez explained to Bachelet at the meeting they both held at the Palacio de la Moncloa, the seat of the Spanish Government.
The defense of human rights and the protection of women in conflict zones and in countries where they are most vulnerable are key actions for the Spanish Executive, assured the Socialist president.
Sánchez, who thanked Bachelet for the “great work” she does, addressed with her the added problem that the coronavirus pandemic has caused for the situation of women and girls in many areas of the world.
Specifically, the head of the Spanish Executive referred to the problems of these groups in Central America and the new restrictions against their freedom in Afghanistan, according to government sources.

As a sign of Spain’s commitment in this area, Sánchez recalled that in 2021 it increased its voluntary contribution to the defense of human rights by 2.75 million euros.
In addition, Spain has presented its candidacy to the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2025-2027.
Bachelet also met with the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, who ratified Spain’s support for her, as well as discussing the human rights situation in Nicaragua, Afghanistan and Ukraine.
For Albares, the work of the UN in these countries is key to trying to alleviate the situation.
