Social movements marched for "living wages" Y "against poverty" in CABA

Social and union organizations mobilized this Thursday at the headquarters of the Buenos Aires Government with a wide range of claims, such as the “creation of decent work and an increase in wages”in defense of policies for the “popular economy” sector and in rejection of “job insecurity and poverty,” spokesmen for the call reported.

The protest began after 10 o’clock, at the corner of Lima and Garay -in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Constitución- and then went to the headquarters of the Government Headquarters, located at 3100 Uspallata, in the neighborhood of Parque Patricios.

Among the conveners were leaders and militants of the Popular Movement (MP) La Dignidad; We are Barrios de Pie; Front of Organizations in Struggle (FOL); Autonomous CTA FeNaT; the Classist and Combative Current (CCC); the Autonomous FOB; the Paritaria Social y Popular organization; the Popular Liberation Movement; and the MTD Aníbal Verón Soberana.

“We tell Larreta enough of the increase in precariousness and poverty and we demand an urgent meeting with the Head of Government to present our urgent demands in favor of the most humble. Unfortunately, the Head of Government does not attend or has in view to resolve the economic and social problems of the City of Buenos Aires”

“The truth is that it was a massive call, we marched from Constitución to Parque Patricios, to the Uspallata headquarters of the City Government,” Marina Josky, leader of the La Dignidad Popular Movement and secretary of Women and Diversity of the Union of Women, told Télam. Workers of the Popular Economy (UTEP).

The leader stressed that “once again, More than 10 social organizations of the City of Buenos Aires mobilized to put a brake on the Government of (Horacio Rodríguez) Larreta and continue demanding active policies with job creation for the most neglected sectors in the district”.

“For this, we demand that Larreta receive the organizations and launch a plan to strengthen the popular economy, with the creation of a Popular Economy District,” he added.

Meanwhile, Walter Córdoba, a leader of the Somos Barrios de Pie Movement, told Télam that “Today we have reached this head of government proposing the concretion of a social parity, the opening and discussion of the increase of the workers of the cooperatives”.

“We continue to insist on the demand for a strengthening of the popular economy; we are proposing the creation of a District for the Popular Economy in CABA, since it is the jurisdiction with the greatest economic resources and it is where formal employment grew the least, where there is greater job insecurity. , where poverty increased in the southern neighborhoods and from there we demand greater food assistance and the urbanization of poor neighborhoods,” the social referent listed.

In a joint document signed by the convening organizations, it was requested: “We tell Larreta enough of the increase in precariousness and poverty and we demand an urgent meeting with the Head of Government to present our urgent demands in favor of the most humble. Unfortunately, the Head of Government does not attend or has in view to resolve the economic and social problems of the City of Buenos Aires”.

In the brief, they argued for the mobilization by remarking: “the social and economic crisis does not exist for the City Government and the only thing they do is criticize those who receive assistance from the State and those who mobilize to claim their rights, in search of of a decent life”.

Social organizations consider being ahead of “a government that turns its back on the more than 300,000 neighbors who live in popular neighborhoods, and on the undertakings of the Popular and Solidarity Economy”.

In this context, they demanded to discuss in a “face-to-face meeting” with Rodríguez Larreta “a floor higher than 45% salary increase than the one offered by the Buenos Aires government in comfortable installments, when inflation is heading for a floor of 60%”.

“We want the government to attend to us, to listen to our proposals in pursuit of a better life for the residents of popular neighborhoods and to attend to the serious social crisis that is being experienced throughout the country and the City of Buenos Aires, promoting the creation of genuine work”, they proposed.

Poverty in CABA

Multidimensional poverty in the City of Buenos Aires (Caba) reached 21.6% of the population and 17.5% of households in the fourth quarter of 2021, with increases of 1.3 and 2.2 percentage points compared to of the last measurement of the same period of 2019, reported the General Directorate of Statistics and Censuses (DGEYC) of Buenos Aires.

The official report not only accounts for an increase in poverty analyzed from a comprehensive approach that goes beyond monetary income, but also confirms the historical gap in the district between the neighborhoods of the North zone and those of the South zone. , in which the levels became five times higher in the latter.

In this sense, the Buenos Aires social organizations also demand the “urgent reopening of parity in a common table between the Government and all the cooperatives of the Clean Paths Program and other similar ones” to arrive at a percentage “that does not condemn us to continue losing power purchasing power in the face of inflation.

Another of the demands that they intend to present to the Head of Government of Buenos Aires consists of the creation of a “District of the Popular Economy”.
