The director of Technical Services of the Urban and Home Cleaning Authority (AAUD), Álvaro Díaz, explained this Thursday, on Radio Panama, about the situation that the entity is going through for the contracting of fleets for the collection of waste, a problem that afflicts the many citizens.
He stated that garbage collection has presented problems, since between February and March a contract with some dump trucks that provided support for this service ended.
“This contract was extended and they began to work again in March, however, despite the fact that the Cleansing Authority has 64 dump trucks, 26 backhoes and 35 compactor trucks, poor collection is noted, because the Cleansing Authority is responsible for the collection, it is not responsible for the disposal of garbage in Cerro Patacón, which is an area that is concessioned to a Colombian company named Urbalia Panamá, SA,” he explained.
He indicated that this company has had serious problems with the disposal of waste, which includes landslides of garbage, and this has caused the flow or cycle of the trucks to slow down. “A truck takes 3 to 4 hours to dispose of a garbage trip and that affects the frequency. A truck that should make 4 to 5 trips a day is only making one or 2 maximum,” he added.
