Lacalle Pou emphasized fighting drug trafficking “at all levels”

Lacalle

Given the violent escalation that the country has experienced in recent weeks, this Wednesday the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, once again referred to the issue of security and pointed to the drug trafficking as one of the main issues to be addressed.

After participating in the act of commemoration of the 211th anniversary of the Battle of the Stones The president gave a press conference. The hierarch acknowledged that “crimes, robberies, thefts have decreased significantly and there was a significant decrease in homicides. Unfortunately, this month of May is a complicated month. However, he indicated that the “security problems were very serious before taking office.”

A new strategy

The statesman said that the Executive is working on a new tactic to deal with drug trafficking, which they consider to be the main focus of violence. “With the Minister of the Interior, the National Director of Police and various Police chiefs, we are trying to establish a focused, tactical strategy for some type of act of violence that is taking place in some areas of the country, basically in Montevideo, but also elsewhere,” he said.

Lacalle anticipated that this tactical plan to be developed “basically will be focused on drug trafficking at all levels: large; micro-trafficking, forms of financing and use of that money when it is laundered”.
