The General Directorate of Statistics and Censuses of Buenos Aires (DGEYC), revealed in its latest report on multidimensional povertywhich reached 21.6% in the City of Buenos Aires during the last quarter of 2021.
This means that more citizens currently live under high levels of lackthen, in 2019, the date on which the last study was carried out, the dimensional poverty reached 20.3%.
This shows that in the last two years, the figure increased 1.3 percentage points in the Cityespecially in the South, where the multidimensional poverty covered 37.2% of its inhabitants.
The second place was occupied by the Central zone, where the percentage reaches 19%, while in the North zone, it is much lower, 8%; that is, almost 5 times less population than in the southern part of the City.
The study also revealed that shortage rates reached 17.5% of households; of these 7.4% are located in the North zone, 16.8% in the Center zone and 32.1% in the South zone.
This means that in recent years the economic conditions of the inhabitants of the City have worsened, especially in the South, where poverty increased by 4.3%.
In other words, every day more citizens have incomes below the value of the total basic basket which, until March, stood at approximately $83,807, a value that increased after inflation in April.
What is multidimensional poverty
According to the DGEYC, “those who have lack of at least two of these five variables: diet; health and care; housing and services; household equipment and social deprivation and education”.
In addition, to be deficient in any of these variables, you must be dissatisfied with at least 33% of the indicators, such as: skipping meals, not having water or electricity, depriving yourself of expenses such as education or vacations.
