The nine days of indefinite general strike in Colón have caused great economic losses, not only in the province but at the country level, according to economist Ernesto Bazán.
The expert indicated that in Panama we have become accustomed to talking about growth, both economists and analysts and the media. “But maybe we should give more importance to development.”
He stated that development should be focused on people and not on figures. He added that there is a tremendous infrastructure deficit in sidewalks, in attention that the city has had, that it is not clean and poverty is felt.
“Colón has had growth, but you have to ask yourself if it has led to development, better health, social services and infrastructure. One of the big problems we have in Colón is that the economy has not worked; there are still needs and the number of shortages is notably more visible,” Bazán remarked.
He commented that we have been bad spenders of resources and that Panama has not known how to redirect resources towards education, for example. “Building schools is not investing in education, it must be comprehensive,” she concluded.
