The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Paulo Alvim, defended today (17) the advance in the country of the bioeconomy – an industrial production model based on the use of biological resources, as an alternative to non-renewable ones. According to the minister, the model is strategic and a priority due to the characteristics of Brazilian biodiversity.
“A country that has biodiversity, with the number of biomes we have, we cannot abandon this differential factor. This, added to the scientific research capacity that we have, which needs to be expanded, but which we have, and in the pandemic it showed its strength, we will be able to build a different country”, said Alvim at the Anbiotec Innovation Forum, at the 27th Hospital Fair , in the capital of São Paulo.
The minister stressed that the increase in the bioeconomy, as well as the digital transformation, is fundamental at the current moment. “We have no doubt that two areas are strategic in this post-pandemic recovery: digital transformation, which has already proved to be extremely relevant, and the bioeconomy, as a differentiating factor to ensure sustainable development,” he said.
According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the bioeconomy moves around €2 trillion on the world market and generates around 22 million jobs. According to the entity, the model will account, by 2030, for 2.7% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of its member countries.
