The president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Minister Edson Fachin, said today (17) that what happens in Brazil serves as a showcase for the global community, and that the country has an obligation to show that it no longer accepts authoritarian adventures.
“We are now a showcase for international analysts, and it is up to Brazilian society to ensure that we bring a message of stability, peace and security to our neighbors, and that Brazil no longer acquiesces in authoritarian adventures,” said Fachin.
The statement was given during the opening of the event Democracy and Elections in Latin America, at the TSE headquarters, in Brasília. Fachin said that Brazil is not oblivious to what happens in other countries, and that what happens here also influences international directions.
The president of the TSE recalled recent cases of attacks on democratic institutions – such as the invasion of the Capitol in the US and attacks on electoral authorities in Mexico, Peru and Ecuador – and stated that Brazil should consider these episodes as a warning of what cannot be done. tolerated.
Fachin also announced a partnership with Professor Daniel Zovatto, from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (Idea Internacional), to bring European election observers to Brazil, in addition to others already confirmed by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Community of Countries of Portuguese Language (CPLP), among others.
