On the afternoon of this Monday, the councilor of the CH Municipality of Montevideo for the Colorado Party, Bautista Gil Castillo, criticized the March of Silence, the event that every May 20 remembers the thousands of disappeared detainees and that this year seeks to distribute 22,000 photographs among the people who attend.
It is the first edition of the march in person after it became virtual during the two years of the health emergency due to the coronavirus.
Gil Castillo, a Colorado youth leader who defines himself as a “libertarian and UM student,” questioned: “With what money is the March of Silence financed? because they are announcing large expenses, for example, printing large photos at the last minute”.
And he added: “It’s all a job that prevents us from moving forward as a country and that makes fun of the victims of the dictatorship and their families.”
In another subsequent tweet, he wanted to add more to his argument: “The only one who did something for the disappeared and their families was Jorge Batlle with the Commission for Peace, where he never lied to begin with. His comments generated outrage and rejection among dozens of people who responded and criticized him for questioning the march organized by Mothers and Relatives of Uruguayans Detained and Disappeared. The tweeter @AlfTuitea reminded him that the Colorado Party owes more than five million dollars to the Municipality of Montevideo. “Rest assured that with money from the Colorado Party, they will not try to pay the contribution debt that your party has,” he added @pepe_fidel.

The user @ ADRY112 tweeted: “If you are not interested in what happened or where they are, at least silence yourself, you are daring and disrespectful.”

On Tuesday morning, he continued to question the march, denouncing that he had been insulted by his words.
