MIAMI, United States. – The Cuban sandwich is one of the 23 best in the world, according to an article published this month by the American chain CNN.
The food, so popular in South Florida, shares the ranking with sandwiches from Mexico, Italy, the Middle East, Vietnam, Uruguay, France, Denmark, South Africa, Canada, the United Kingdom and Japan, among other regions of the world.
The CNN article quotes Andrew T. Huse, Jeff Houck and Barbara Cruz, authors of the forthcoming book The Cuban Sandwich: A History in Layers (The Cuban Sandwich: A Layered Story).
According to these authors, the Cuban sandwich is the subject of constant debate in Miami and Tampa, where its fundamental ingredients and its origin are still being discussed.
“Whether you eat yours with salami (a la Tampa) or not (a la Miami), this sandwich layered with cooked ham, roast pork, pickles, mustard, Swiss cheese and butter and pressed between pieces of fluffy Cuban bread is a simple and substantial recipe, and, in most cases, it is affordable food, ”acknowledges CNN.
Paradoxically, most Cubans living on the island do not know the aforementioned sandwich, a creation of exile. In fact, the bread used to prepare the Cuban sandwich hardly exists on the Island.
“Unknown by our children and also lost that page of our folklore, in the south of the United States they produce and distribute daily thousands of pounds of ‘our daily bread’, a product that you can carry in a hygienic and attractive cartridge, flanked for our flag, with the very patriotic sign of ‘Cuban Bread’”, wrote the author Alberto Méndez Castelló in CubaNet.
