MinTransporte presents advances in energy transition in Germany

The Minister of Transport, Ángela María Orozco, will participate from May 16 to 20 in the International Transport Forum (ITF), an event coordinated by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in Leipzig, Germany. During this meeting, the senior official will speak about the gender approach in transport infrastructure in Colombia, the progress that the country is making in terms of energy transition in the transport sector and how various road infrastructure programs are being executed.

One of the main issues that will be on the agenda of Minister Orozco, who will be accompanied by the Colombian ambassador to Germany, Felipe Buitrago, is the energy transition. On the one hand, they will highlight the advances in promoting mass use of electric vehicles, such as thea National Electric Mobility Strategywhich includes incentives such as the rate for the tax on electric vehicles may not exceed 1% of the commercial value, a 10% discount on the SOAT and 30% on technical-mechanical inspection, as well as exceptions to certain vehicle restrictions, among others.

There are currently 7,782 electric vehicles in the country, more than 1,100 units more than the 6,600 that the Government had set as a goal in the 2018-2022 National Development Plan. Of this total, 1,166 are electric buses, distributed as follows: 1,061 electric buses in the public transport system of Bogotá – TransMilenio; 69 electric buses in Metroplús in Medellín and 36 electric buses in MIO in Cali.

On the other hand, nearly $3.15 billion (USD841.5 million) are being earmarked to co-finance 70% of the value of the construction of the Light Metro on Avenida 80 in Medellín, the Ibagué Strategic Public Transportation System and the Section 3 of the Eastern Trunk of the MIO in Cali.

At the same time, it is worth mentioning that the minister will have an outstanding participation in the inauguration of the world campaign to encourage the electrification of urban public bus systems (TUMI E. Bus Mission Campaign organized by the German Ministry of Cooperation and Development), which will have place in Leipzig on Tuesday, May 17. The Senior Official will participate in the conference “Transforming Transport Infrastructure”, in which he will expose the different regulations that Colombia has in order to encourage the renewal of the fleet of public transport systems, to zero emission technologies.

The Ministry of Transportation and TUMI chose Valledupar and Barranquilla to provide support and technical advice to these cities in order to achieve the transition from conventional to electric fleet. Likewise, Bogotá was selected as a mentor city for its experience in the implementation of electric fleets. In this field, as mentioned aboveColombia is a leader in Latin America, due to the public policies and investments that have been made to generate sustainable mobility in mass public transport systems, which contribute to mitigating environmental pollution in the country, the emission of greenhouse gases, among others.

Minister Orozco is expected to be accompanied at the launch of this initiative by transport ministers and senior officials from other countries around the world. The participation in this event of the Minister of Cooperation and Development of Germany is also planned.

Similarly, on May 17, Minister Orozco will intervene in a panel on the “future of inclusive mobility”, where she will talk about the progress of the transport sector for greater gender equity; while as of May 18, the Minister will participate in panels related to adaptation to climate change in the transport sector and road safety in Latin America, among others. Another of the key meetings that Orozco will hold at the ITF is related to road safety policies to be implemented both globally and in Latin America.
