World Recycling Day: How much waste does Bogota generate vs. how much is recycled?

How much waste does Bogotá generate?

According to the current mayor of Bogotá, Claudia López, about 6,300 tons of waste arrive at the Doña Juana landfill daily, which, seeking a comparison to calculate its size, the Special Administrative Unit for Public Services (UAESP) has announced that The capital could fill the Colpatria tower every day with the garbage that is produced.

In an annual calculation, Bogota produces 2.3 million tons of garbage, according to the Colombian Network of Cities How We Are Going.

And of these, how many are recycled?

According to the UAESP, only 15% of the waste generated in Bogotá is used, when a figure of up to 70% could be reached.

Although Bogotá has 18,335 recyclers registered in the Single Register of Official Recyclers and with 46 recycler organizations, one of the main reasons for reaching a higher figure in the city is that precisely the inhabitants or do not know how to do it. the sorting of waste, or it is simply a task that they do not perform.

Different strategies are currently being carried out in the city to promote carrying out the ‘three R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle’.

However, one of the most ambitious that the current administration has proposed has to do with a new thermovalorizationwhich sought to generate energy from the garbage in Bogotá and would manage to transform between 2,400 and 3,000 tons of waste into more than 128 megawatts of energy.

However, the award of this project and how it will be carried out in the Doña Juana landfill is still awaited.
