The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, will attend the Summit of the Americas in the city of Los Angeles, in the United States, and his government is managing the participation of Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua, despite the fact that the hosts do not consider them, he announced. this Monday the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonia Urrejola.

The minister commented in an interview with the newspaper La Tercera that Boric wants the summit to be as broad as possibleand that, despite the differences, “and even the convictions that may exist in the area of human rights regarding some governments, we believe that post-pandemic and economic crisis, it is also a time to have a space for dialogue beyond differences”.

Urrejola said that on his trip to Costa Rica for the transfer of command a few days ago, he took advantage of speaking with representatives of different governments, “giving a bit of our opinion on why the region needs to talk beyond differences.”

the official believes that the summit loses force if certain countries are marginalized. In fact, the Mexican president, López Obrador, has already announced that he will not attend the summit if the countries mentioned are marginalized, a measure that the Government of Chile will not take.

“We are taking steps to make it as broad as possible, but we are working on the president’s agenda, both within the scope of the summit and also on the bilateral agenda. We have not made participation subject to this issue,” the minister assured.

The Summit of the Americas is the main diplomatic forum of the American continent, and will be held between June 6 and 10, for the first time in the United States, specifically in Los Angeles.

The United States maintains that Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba do not respect democracy or human rights, and Urrejola considers that “recent years show that exclusion has not produced results in terms of human rights in Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba. So, you have to change the recipe”.

Lastly, Urrejola was asked about Boric’s low approval rating: “The truth is, and I don’t want to exaggerate, what he generates abroad shocks me. My diary accounts for that. I have a super busy agenda with foreign ministers and not only from the region. There is a common factor that is interest in this new younger leadershipperhaps more informal, who says what he thinks, “he replied.

“There is still a lot of expectation of how, based on that leadership, international relations can change. And that is why he pointed to the issue of dialogue without exclusions, I think it is because he, being critical of various human rights situations in the region, is at the same time open to dialogue. That recipe didn’t apply for a long time,” he concluded.

Despite the considerations of the host country, the United States Government announced that it has not yet sent out all the invitationssince a decision has not yet been made on the matter.
