Population with adequate employment in Lima grows between February and April, but still below the pre-pandemic level

The employed population in Lima reached 5.5 million people in the moving quarter from February to April of that year, which meant an increase of 22.9% higher than the same period in 2021, according to the latest report on employment in Metropolitan Lima of the (INEI).

The report “Situation of the Labor Market in Metropolitan Lima” also indicated that, when comparing the moving quarter of analysis with the same quarter of 2021 and 2020, the employed population with adequate employment grew by 41.1% (803,800) and 26.3% (574,600), respectively. However, compared to 2019, it has not yet recovered the level obtained by falling by 11.7% (-364,600).

In that period, the underemployed population reached 2.2 million people, higher by 6.4% and 31.1% when compared to the same quarter of 2021 and 2019, respectively.

Unemployment

Meanwhile, unemployment affected 8.3%, being 6.8% lower compared to the same quarter of 2021 (15.1%) and 0.7% compared to the same time in 2020 (9%), as well as 1% below what was registered in the same 2019 period.

Specifically, the study estimates that 455,000 people actively sought work in the Peruvian capital in those months.

Employed population by gender

During the months of study, the female employed population increased by 28.2% (501,400) and the male population by 18.9% (440,100), in relation to the same period of the previous year.

With respect to age groups, the population under 25 years old grew 30.4% (195,300), in the population aged 45 and over the growth of 30.9% (406,700) and in the population aged 25 to 44 years old by 15.8% (339,500). .

INEI specified that when comparing this result with the same quarter of 2020, the employed population presented a similar behavior; however, compared to 2019, it only increased in the population aged 45 and over by 17.7%.

Sectors with the highest growth in employment

The INEI reported that, between the months of February and April of this year, the level of employment in the Manufacturing sector registered the greatest increase with 28.3% (148,600), followed by Services at 25.6% (554,000), Commerce at 21.2% ( 206,400) and Construction at 9.1% (35,400).

However, when comparing this result with the same quarter of 2020, it maintained a similar behavior; while, compared to 2019, it fell 3.8% in the Services sector.

On the other hand, the INEI announced that the average monthly income of workers in Metropolitan Lima showed a positive behavior in all age groups. Thus, it grew by 6.1% (S/ 101.50) among employed persons aged 25 to 44, by 4.8% (S/ 79.10) in the group aged 45 and over, and by 2.5% (S/ / 25.40) among young people between 14 and 24 years old.

Monthly average income

The INEI reported that, in the February-March-April quarter of this year, the average monthly income from work in the main activity in Metropolitan Lima was S/ 1,632, that is, 4.9% (S/ 75.7) more than in same quarter of the previous year. Compared to the same period in 2020 and 2019, it decreased by 1.9% (-S/ 31.1) and 6% (-S/ 103.4), respectively.

By sex, the average income for men was S/ 1,890 and for women S/ 1,311.

The INEI also announced that income showed a positive behavior in all age groups. Thus, it grew by 6.1% (S/ 101.5) among employed persons aged 25 to 44, by 4.8% (S/ 79.1) in the group aged 45 and over, and by 2.5% (S/ 25.4) among young people. from 14 to 24 years old.
