ONPE: 147 political organizations choose their candidates this Sunday in internal elections

The (ONPE) reported that this Sunday, May 15, between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, the internal elections of 15 political parties, 131 regional movements and an electoral alliance will be held, in order to elect their candidates. to the regional and municipal elections of October 2, 2022.

“These partisan elections, the first in electoral history to elect subnational candidates with mandatory participation in the Electoral System, will mean the return to the polls of 1,659,070 affiliated men and women, at the national level,” ONPE said.

The electoral body has planned the installation of 5,195 polling stations, which will be distributed in 1,052 polling places, mostly educational institutions, all duly guarded by the Armed Forces and the National Police.

The internal elections will be held in 870 districts of the country, for which the ONPE established 19 Regional Coordination Offices (ORC) and nine focal points.

What are the modalities of election?

The ONPE reported that by mandate of Law No. 31357, there are two modalities for the election of candidates: the direct and the indirect.

In the first case, with the universal, free, voluntary, equal, direct and secret vote, the members will go to the polls to directly elect the candidates. This modality will be applied by 5 political parties, 53 regional movements and an electoral alliance.

With the second modality, also with the universal, free, voluntary, equal, direct and secret, the affiliates will select delegateswho, in a second election, on May 22, will finally choose their candidates for the October elections. This method will be used by 10 political parties and 78 regional movements, that is, the majority of political organizations.

For this reason, the ballot paper that the voters will receive will depend on the modality chosen: if it is direct, it will allow the election of candidates and, if it is indirect, delegates.

Due to the complexity of the process, ONPE had to prepare 679 different ballot paper designs for these elections, which involved intense dissemination and training of electoral actors.

“For the specific case of the polling station members, appointed by the political organizations themselves, the ONPE provided decentralized training, via the Regional Coordination Offices (ORC) and the Focal Points, in addition to virtual training through the agency’s website. electoral. They were also given two training days, on April 30 and May 7,” the entity reported.

Likewise, it was indicated that in 4,672 polling stations, out of a total of 5,195, the polling station members will have the Technological Solution to Support the Scrutiny (STAE), in order to facilitate the counting of the electoral records.

Vaccination card will be required

The ONPE reported that the militants who go to vote today will be required to present the physical or virtual vaccination card, which certifies having received three doses against COVID-19.

This is one of the measures approved in the update of the seven safety and prevention protocols against coronavirus.
