MIAMI, United States.- The US Embassy in Havana drew attention this Sunday to the immigration issue on the island and reiterated its call for legal and safe emigration, in a post on its Twitter social network account.

The diplomatic headquarters also expressed its support for the Cuban people in their demands for freedom and changes in a country whose government allows its citizens to live with dignity.

“The lack of hope fuels irregular migration throughout the Americas, including Cuba. We support the demands of Cubans for freedom, respect for their human rights and greater economic opportunities so that they can lead a successful life in their country”, reads the publication of the Embassy in Cuba.

The migration crisis on the southern border of the United States, bordering Mexico, has set off alarms in Washington due to the high numbers of Cubans and citizens of other nationalities who enter the country daily.

The number of migrants last March exceeded 221,000, of which 32,141 were Cubans, the second largest group after Mexicans.

According to a note from Radio Televisión Martí, the chaotic situation has caused the United States Customs and Border Protection Service (CBP) to launch an initiative that seeks to instruct migrants about the risks of falling into hands of those engaged in human trafficking.

“Do not put yourself or your family in danger!” Says the tweet from the US Embassy, in relation to the CBP campaign.

On May 3, the United States consulate in Cuba started issuing visasafter four years of closure due to the so-called “Havana Syndrome”, according to the AFP news agency.

“Welcome to the embassy -of the United States- after so long!” was the message from a Cuban employee at the diplomatic headquarters to a group of people waiting for their consular appointment.

The US consulate in Havana closed in September 2017, after the Donald Trump administration (2017-2021) denounced several incidents, at the time described as sonic attacks, that affected the health of US diplomats.

Since then, Cubans have had to carry out visa procedures for the United States in third countries such as Colombia and Guyana.
