This Sunday an Ecumenical Te Deum was held on the occasion of the 211 years of National Independence. The message was a fight against all forms of violence and corruption, and a call for peace and social equity in the country.
The celebration held in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Asunción was attended by the President of the Republic, Mario Abdo Benítez, the First Lady, Silvana Abdo, Vice President Hugo Velazquez, the head of Congress, Oscar Salomón, the Vice President of the Supreme Court of Justice, Alberto Martínez, Attorney General Sandra Quiñónez, among other state authorities.
On the occasion, the Archbishop of Asunción, Adalberto Martínez, issued a message in which he lamented the economic and social inequality that affects thousands of Paraguayans, as well as the acts of violence.
Likewise, he called on the authorities to combat the symptoms of inequality, corruption and the presence of organized crime in public institutions. “The dreamed homeland can become a nightmare that requires new patriotic heroes to deepen the feat of Independence that we remember today,” he said.
He added that adequate care for the population and guarantees of decent living conditions make it possible to combat insecurity and violence, as well as reduce social inequity.
The archbishop also referred to the murder of prosecutor Marcelo Pecci and expressed his condolences to the relatives, as well as to the families of victims of organized crime groups and radical groups who were flagged for the violence.
On the other hand, he congratulated the mothers on their day, this May 15, and expressed his joy at the pro-life and pro-family declarations of public sectors and called for coherent gestures for the protection of life in all its stages, ensuring conditions of decent lives for all Paraguayans. IP
