Cuba describes its presumed exclusion from the Summit of the Americas as a new US aggression

The International Relations Commission of the National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP) is pronounced this Saturday about the “intention” proclaimed by “senior officials of the United States Government” “to exclude Cuba from the next Summit of the Americas”. The act has been condemned by parliamentarians, who define it as a “new aggressive act by the United States against Cuba.”

“In recent days, high-ranking officials of the United States Government have ratified their intention to exclude Cuba from the next Summit of the Americas”… “There is not a single reason that justifies the exclusion of any country of Our America from this meeting,” underlines the Declaration issued on the first day of the fifth extraordinary session of the legislative body.

The Declaration is made public after United States officials reiterated this week that the Joe Biden administration will not invite Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela to the meeting, scheduled for June 6-10 in Los Angeles, because it considers that “they do not respect” democracy.

However, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki reiterated again yesterday In a press conference that the invitations to the event have not yet been sent and pointed out that a process of conversations is currently underway to complete the list of invited nations.

“The United States government is fooling itself by trying to silence the serene but firm voice of Cuba, in favor of the right of the Latin American and Caribbean peoples to defend their sovereignty, their desire to build fairer and more inclusive societies, to live in a world of peace and against the imposition of imperial mechanisms and designs”, expresses the declaration.

Cuba has attended the two previous editions (in Lima in 2018 and in Panama City in 2015) of the Summit of the Americas, but since last April the Cuban foreign minister warned that the country would be excluded. In this regard, the Cuban assembly members considered that this position “is totally identified with the demands and pressures of the sectors of the extreme anti-Cuban right and its main spokesmen in the US legislature.”

Cuban government criticizes its exclusion from the Summit of the Americas by the US

The possible exclusion of Havana, Caracas and Managua has generated criticism and even the leaders of some countries, such as the presidents of Mexico and Bolivia, who have warned that if there are excluded they will not personally attend the event. Other countries, such as some Caribbean nations, are also studying whether to join the meeting in Los Angeles under these conditions.

The IX Summit of the Americas will be the second organized by the United States after the original edition in Miami in 1994, and Washington’s main objective on this occasion is to design a regional migration pact.

The Declaration of the Cuban parliamentarians was presented during the first day of the Fifth Extraordinary Session, in its IX Legislature, and after new deputies were presented to the plenary after having observed a minute of silence for the victims of the fateful accident at the Saratoga hotel.
