This is what a working day looks like for the world's 'oldest employee'

At 100 years old, Brazilian Walter Orthmann holds the title of longest career in the same company in the world, with more than eight expressive decades of work, a feat that he himself considers something “remarkable“.

It is remarkable that you wake up in the morning and have an engagement. If you have a commitment, you don’t feel the time go by (…) I really love workingOrthmann told the agency EFE.

The Brazilian, born in 1922, has spent 84 years working for a textile company of the city of Brusque, in the state of Santa Catarina (south), and won the title of “oldest official in the world”, according to the Guinness Record on January 6.

The trajectory of Orthmann, the eldest among five brothers, began on January 17, 1938, when he was only 15 years old and was hired, to help support his family, for Industries Renaux S.A.

Little by little, he stood out among the squad and climbed the career ladder until he became sales Manager.

For 60 years, he traveled to multiple destinations for the company, but his journeys abroad came to an end in 2015, due to advanced age.

The end of the trips, however, did not mean the end of his professional career.

I have agreed to cut travel short and stay here, assisting new staff arriving and traveling or dealing with customers over the phone“, he assured.

According to Orthmann, the secret to his longevity with the company lies in discipline and dedication to its clients, with whom he always sought a differentiated contact that allowed him to create bonds of trust.

Clients are happy to talk to me, because I know everyone. I know about their lives, how they are, what they have“he counted.

Walter Orthmann is described by his colleagues as a very kind person.

Throughout his more than eight decades of work, the old man never missed an opportunity to learn new skills and was direct witness of the digital and social transformation that Brazil has gone through in recent years.

In my time, none of that existed, everything was done from memory. There was not even the calculating machine“, but, “Today, with just a phone, you do everything you need“, he pointed.

In the company facilities where he continues to work, Orthmann is recognized wherever he goes and receives the greetings and admiration of his colleagues.

Always kind, he doesn’t skimp on answers and always takes a few seconds to chat with colleagues.

Just under a month ago, the worker completed 100 years of life, although he is emphatic in stating that he does not intend to retire soon, since “There is always something new to learn“.

I keep working and learning. It will never be possible to know everything. Every day there is something new to learn. You can reach 100 years and you will continue learning every day“, he asserted.
