On the occasion of a new celebration of International Nursing Day, yesterday, Thursday 12, a series of activities were carried out via zoom with authorities from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), in in which a fine-tuning of the situation of Nursing in Uruguay was made and the main lines of action on which the Ministry of Public Health, through the National Nursing Commission (CONAE), is working. Minister Daniel Salinas participated in this instance.
The Secretary of State, which mentioned the commemoration through its communication channels, pointed out regarding Nursing Day that “After having made a diagnosis of the Nursing situation in the country, based on the National Census (2013) and the National Survey (2014), added to the data obtained from the information systems of human resources in health of the MSP (2019), CONAE presented in 2020 a National Nursing Development Plan defining seven strategic lines of action. Based on this previous work, PAHO proposed to CONAE to carry out a Political Dialogue on Nursing, which seeks, based on the exchange of actors from the areas involved in the subject of nursing in Uruguay, better decision-making and design of public policies”.
The MSP details that Nursing in Uruguay represents 31.2% of the workforce in the health sector. “It has a large number of nursing assistants with heterogeneous training, a highly feminized and young group. In relation to its distribution, there is a deficit of professionals at the first level of care and unequal distribution in the territory”, is explained in an article.
“Each of the proposals to improve the working conditions of Nursing in Uruguay are based on the available scientific evidence and have a broad consensus of all the parties involved. A close link between health, education, work and the community, in addition to the active participation of municipalities and social organizations are essential for the improvement of Nursing in Uruguay, whose collaboration is essential to achieve the goals of access and coverage universal health services”, says the Secretary of State.
“From the Nursing Political Dialogue developed in 2021, a stage of preparation and presentation of proposals was opened that are under consideration by the health authority. Investing in Nursing is to improve the quality of health care for the entire population”, concludes the MSP.
