18 US congressmen ask Biden to lift sanctions on Venezuela

The congressmen specify that they request the lifting of economic and sectoral sanctions. They allude to the statements of opposition leaders, such as former Governor Henrique Capriles, about the failure of this type of measure because “they did not give the expected result”

A group of 18 Democratic congressmen from the United States requested, in a letter addressed to President Joe Biden, that the sanctions on Venezuela be lifted as they consider that they “exacerbate the humanitarian situation.”

The letter, dated Tuesday, May 10, recognizes the efforts of the Biden administration “towards a constructive engagement with the government of Venezuela.” In particular, the talks to achieve the release of two Citgo executives stand out, in addition to the apparent commitment to restart the negotiation between Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan opposition in Mexico.

Despite the recognition of Maduro and his allies as the main responsible for the country’s humanitarian and political crisis, US congressmen assure that the sanctions imposed by former President Donald Trump “not only failed to improve the situation in Venezuela, but also significantly exacerbated it.” ”.

The letter, released by reporter Joshua Goodman, was signed by congressmen Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, Raúl Grijalva, Jesús García, Jan Schakowsky, Juan Vargas, Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, James McGovern, Jared Huffman, Pramila Jayapal, Eleanor Holmes, Earl Blumenauer, Henry Johnson, Donald Payne, Rashida Tlaib, Andy Levin, Jamaal Bowman, and Bonnie Watson.

The congressmen specify that they request the lifting of economic and sectoral sanctions. They consider that its decrease would mark “a critical step in the process of commitment and diplomacy that his administration has initiated and could contribute to the resolution of the political crisis and improve the well-being of the Venezuelan people.”

“The suffering of the Venezuelan people is a tragedy. Although this tragedy is the result of several factors, numerous studies have shown that US sanctions have been one of the main causes. And these impacts are not the same: Broad-based sanctions are widely known to disproportionately harm women and girls, as well as other vulnerable populations, including people with disabilities or chronic illnesses and indigenous populations.

They also allude to the statements of opposition leaders, such as the former Governor Henrique Caprilesabout the failure of this type of measure because “they did not give the expected result”.

A few months ago, a group of Venezuelans from various social sectors sent a letter to the Joe Biden government also requesting the lifting of sanctions. A few days later, another group – which included politicians – reiterated that maintaining these measures contributes to keeping the “narco-state” at bay, as they call the Maduro administration.
