US Border Patrol detains Cuban migrants in Arizona

MIAMI, United States.- A group of 68 migrants, most of them Cuban, were detained this Wednesday by Border Patrol agents from the Ajo Station, west of Lukeville, Arizona, according to a report on the Mexican website Bridge Project.

“Most were adults and family units from Cuba. Multiple officers responded to assist with transportation and processing,” John R. Modlin, Tucson Sector Patrol Chief, said on Twitter.

According to the note, much of the operational area of the Ajo Station is located in a complex territory from a geographical point of view, since, for an illegal entry through that area, migrants often have to spend several days in the desert. .

The terrain is rough, rocky, and the desert is covered with cacti and bushes that make travel difficult. Also, due to the remoteness, a large part of the area is patrolled not only on foot but also by horseback patrols, ATVs and motorcycles.

Around the Ajo Station, which spans more than 52 miles along the international border and has nearly 8,800 square miles of operational area, agents combine tracking with ground-based sensors and night vision equipment.

arrest figures

In the middle of last March, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents intercepted 77 migrants, most also of Cuban origin, as they advanced through the desert in the state of Arizona.

The number of Cubans detained by the US Customs and Border Protection Office set a new record last April, with 35,000 people captured.

In recent months the numbers of immigrants detained at the border have increased exponentially. In April the number rose to 234,000, compared to 221,000 in March.
