Colombian congresswoman Juanita Goebertus, who ends her legislative term in July, said that “it will be an immense honor to work for the defense of the rule of law and for the protection of human rights in Latin America.”
The international organization Human Rights Watch announced that Colombian congresswoman Juanita Goebertus Estrada will take over as director for the division of the Americas from August 2022, replacing José Miguel Vivanco.
“It is with great joy that I tell you that I have been chosen as Director of the Americas Division of @hrw. It will be a great honor and challenge to continue the legacy of @VivancoJM in the region. I will start functions in August,” the representative to the Chamber for Bogotá wrote on Twitter.
“From today I will refrain from participating in electoral politics,” added the lawyer and political scientist, who was part of the Juan Manuel Santos government team (2010-2018) that negotiated the peace agreement with the former FARC.

HRW clarified, in his web pagethat the congresswoman will not represent in any field or speak on behalf of the organization until she takes office in August.
Tamara Taraciuk, acting director for the Americas, will continue to lead the division through the end of July. After that date she will become deputy director, a new leadership position for the Americas division.
The congresswoman, who ends her legislative period in July, said that “it will be an immense honor to work for the defense of the rule of law and for the protection of human rights in Latin America.”
He also described as “immense responsibility to continue” with the “legacy” left by Vivanco, “but I know that hand in hand with the extremely talented team of the division we will achieve it,” he said.
Juanita Goebertus Estrada is a lawyer and political scientist expert in peace, security, transitional justice and post-conflict. She was coordinator of Transitional Justice of the Office of the High Commissioner for Peace in Colombia for four years, and a member of the government delegation at the Table of Conversations in Cuba.
She has been Deputy Director of the Institute for Comprehensive Transitions, advisor to the High National Security Advisor of Colombia, researcher at the Hauser Center of the Kennedy School at Harvard University, advisor to the Vice Minister of Defense and research assistant at the Fundación Ideas para la Peace.
In addition to belonging to the first constitutional and legal ethics commissions, the congresswoman also participated in the accidental commission for Venezuela within the Colombian Congress.
