The Hospital de Clínicas Dr. Manuel Quintela innovates with extended hours to bring all those people who wish to donate blood but cannot do so during the usual hours. In this framework, this Friday, May 13, from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., the First Night Day of blood donation will take place.
The activity will take place on the ground floor of the Hospital and will be carried out in conjunction with the Hemotherapy Technicians Career and the Chair of Transfusion Medicine. Basic requirements to donate
- Be between 18 and 65 years old
- Weigh more than 50 kg
- Have a valid identity card
Currently donating blood does not imply a special fast given the advances in examination techniques that are used today, but before donating it is recommended:
- Sleep at least six hours
- It is allowed to drink liquids such as mate, coffee, tea, juices (avoid alcohol, dairy products and their derivatives)
- It is allowed to eat bread, cookies, jams, fruits, cereals (avoid dairy products)

- How often can I donate blood? Men can donate blood every three months and women every four.
- Can I donate with a tattoo or piercing/caravan? Yes, after twelve months of having tattoos, piercings or caravans, you can donate blood.
- If I smoked marijuana, can I donate blood? Yes, after five days of the last consumption.
- If I had Covid-19, how soon after can I donate blood? After 14 days of receiving the medical discharge.
- If I have been vaccinated against Covid-19, how soon after can I donate? For Sinovac and Pfizer, it is enough that 72 hours have elapsed since the vaccine was administered.
- Do I have a day off to donate blood? Yes, all public and private workers have the right not to go to work that day and to be paid as worked (Law No. 16168).
