After leading the act of renovation of the Plazoleta José Francisco Peña Gómez, on Padre Castellanos Avenue (formerly 17), President Luis Abinader assured that his Government executes, through social programs, the social democratic ideological current of the late PRD leader, deceased on May 10, 1998.
“Social democracy is to allow the development of companies, businesses, encourage them, but always protect those who need the most, always having the human being as an objective in the Government’s public policy,” said the president.
Abinader said that since his arrival in the Government in August 2020 his main objective has been to improve people’s quality of life, and he has done so in one of the worst economic and social times, which according to data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) ), he adds, is the worst in the last century, due to the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
He indicated that covid-19 and the war have created a distortion of commodities, that is, raw materials.
Abinader defined himself as a Peñagomist, since he has placed Dominicans at the center of his public policies, providing 2.3 million medical insurances to the same number of low-income people and has doubled the Superate cards from 850,000 to 1,350 million, as well as the allocated amount, among other initiatives.
“We doubled the amount of university scholarships that are given to Dominicans; We have tripled the coverage of the economic kitchens and we made a salary increase 21% above the inflation level,” added Abinader.

On the 24th anniversary of Peña Gómez’s death today, the square was handed over, where the “Opportunity 14-24” program will also operate, which will serve as technical training for young people in the area.
In this sense, Tony Peña Guaba, son of Peña Gómez, maintained that this program was a wish of his father: “who always lived thinking of others.”
