Venezuelan Foreign Minister Félix Plasencia expressed this Wednesday solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka, in the face of the social and economic crisis that they are going through after the resignation of their prime minister.
“From Venezuela we express our solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka for the unfortunate social and economic crisis they are facing,” Plasencia wrote on his Twitter social network account.
In the message, he expresses support and a call to the parties to promote national dialogue and the peaceful solution of disputes in pursuit of the well-being of the population.
On May 9, Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from his post as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, after the outbreak of violent clashes in the country’s capital between his supporters and opponents of the Government.
Following the Prime Minister’s decision, several Cabinet ministers, including the head of Health, also tendered their resignations, AVN reports.
That same day, a curfew was imposed due to the violent demonstrations in the Asian country of 22 million inhabitants, which has suffered serious shortages of food, fuel and medicine for several months.
This collapse was triggered after the coronavirus pandemic cut off tourism and remittance revenues. The protesters had been demanding the resignation of the president for weeks, accused of causing the crisis.
