Minister of the Interior confirmed that the immobilization of April 5 was the decision of the government of Pedro Castillo

The Minister of the Interior, appears this morning before the Plenary of the to answer a list of nine questions related to the declaration of social immobilization on April 5 and the excesses registered in the framework of the carrier strike carried out in previous days.

In this context, the head of the Interior ratified that the social immobilization decreed by the government, and which generated the majority rejection of the citizenry, responded to an exclusive decision of the Executive Power.

In this regard, he specified that information from the DINI Intelligence warned that on April 5 the situation of violence in Lima and Callao would worsen, and in his capacity as Minister of the Interior, he reported the fact to the Council of Ministers, which was in session on April 4.

“This document was put to the consideration of the Council that unanimously approved the issuance of the supreme decree that declared mandatory social immobilization,” he stressed in his speech.

The head of the Interior also reported the circumstances in which three Peruvians died in Cayma, Jauja and Ica during the excesses carried out in the framework of the carrier strike. He also reported on the health status of two young people who have lost sight in their right eye.

In all of these cases, however, he disclaimed responsibility from the National Police, which generated a series of criticisms from parliamentarians, some of whom, such as Alejandro Muñante, from Renovación Popular, and Eduardo Salhuana, from Alianza para el Progreso, openly questioned his continuance in office.

Sigrid Bazán, alternate spokeswoman for the Cambio Democrático bloc, for her part, anticipated that if Chávarry does not resign, she will promote a motion of censure against him.

Finally, Chávarry stressed that the National Police “is a tutelary institution of the State and its mission is eminently social and among its functions is to maintain and restore internal order under the provisions of the Constitution.”
