The Mayor’s Office of Valledupar has decided to remove the sculptures in tribute to Diomdees Díaz, Jorge Oñate and Iván Villazón.
Colombia News.
“So that the citizens feel their absence,” this was argued by the mayor of Valledupar, Mello Castro, about the decision to remove the statues of Vallenato singers that have been vandalized in recent months.
The most recent to suffer damage was the one installed in the Parque de La Provincia in honor of the ‘Goldfinch of America’, the great Jorge Oñate.
This figure was vandalized by misfits who placed a condom on his microphone and also stole part of the Grammy cast in bronze and other alloys.

Other sculptures in homage to Kaleth Morales, Peter Manjarrés, Iván Villazón ‘La voz tenor’ and ‘El Cacique de La Junta’ Diomedes Díaz, have also been damaged in some of their pieces.
For example, ‘Kaleth’ had two fingers broken, ‘Peter’ had an arm broken and ‘Diomedes’ had his “diamond”, a symbolic stone made in Murano, taken away.
This is why the Mayor’s Office of Valledupar, at the head of Mello Castro, has devised a plan to remove the sculptures that adorn the Parque de La Provincia in order to start a restoration process.

It should be noted that these figures have been made with public resources.
“We need more citizen culture so that everyone, locals and visitors, can continue enjoying them,” said the mayor’s office.

In the same way, the authorities call on the community so that these works are taken care of since they are part of the legacy of the artists who have raised the name of Vallenato music.
