The main researcher of Human Rights Watch (HRW) for the Americas, César Muñoz, lamented the complaint raised by a candidate for Ombudsman about an alleged need to have “godparents” to reach that position.
“The complaint of a candidate for the Ombudsman that they asked him for money in exchange for support and the need for political “godfathers” is very worrying,” he said.
In this context, he added that the Legislature must elect an authority “whose sole commitment is to defend” human rights.
Ramiro Iquise Pally described as “flawed” the last phase of the election of the Ombudsman in the Plurinational Legislative Assembly and assured that one “comes adrift” if he does not have a political line.
“It seems to me that until the interview stage everything was fine; unfortunately this last stage has been a bit flawed. Unfortunately you have to have godparents, you have to corrupt people. When you are not a supporter of any political line, you have to drift as it happens in my case, right?” Iquise asserted in an interview with radio Fides.

The session for the election of the new defender entered the intermediate quarter after in the first two rounds of voting no candidate managed to add two thirds of the vote.
The candidate for the position did not add votes in this process. Pedro Callisaya received the majority of the support, in the opposition they assure that he is a favorite of the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS).
