The Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), which measures official inflation, for April was 1.06%. The rate was below the one registered in March (1.62%). But at the same time, it was the highest rate for a month of April since 1996 (1.26%).
According to data released today (11) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), accumulated inflation in 12 months reached 12.13%, above the immediately previous 12 months and the highest since October 2003 (13.98%). . The rate accumulated in the year reached 4.29%.
Eight of the nine groups of products and services surveyed had price increases in April. Food, with inflation of 2.06%, had the biggest impact on official inflation for the month.
“In food and beverages, the rise was driven by the rise in food prices for home consumption (2.59%). There was a rise of more than 10% in long-life milk, and in important components of the consumer basket such as potato (18.28%), tomato (10.18%), soy oil (8.24%) , French bread (4.52%) and meat (1.02%)”, explains IBGE researcher André Almeida.
Transport prices rose 1.91% and were the second main contributor to the month’s IPCA. Together, the two groups contributed around 80% of the month’s inflation.
Among transport, the main responsible for the rise in prices were fuels, which rose 3.20%, especially gasoline (2.48%).
Health and personal care (1.77%), household articles (1.53%), clothing (1.26%), personal expenses (0.48%), communication (0.08 %) and education (0.06%).
The only group of expenses with deflation (fall in prices) was housing (-1.14%), due to the 6.27% drop in the price of electricity.
