Colombia, hand in hand with the Vice President and Foreign Minister, Martha Lucia Ramirez signed in Washington the accession of the country to the Artemis Agreement with an emphasis on promoting aerospace activities and encourage the participation of women scientists and researchers in this industry.
“The Agreement with NASA is a commitment to our women, because the Artemis Program aims to send the first woman to the Moon, possibly in the 2024 mission, then in the mission to Mars, and we want to see Colombian women in that group. In addition, it will give a great boost to the development of our aerospace industry and put our country on the world stage.”, affirmed the senior official.

He stressed that Artemisa is the result of the joint work of several entities, including the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, the Ministry of Information Technologies, the Colombian Air Force and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which are part of the Colombian Space Commission -CCE, which is chaired by the vice president, from where different actions have been promoted such as CONPES 3983-2020 – Space development policy: enabling conditions for the promotion of national competitiveness, as well as collaboration agreements with India and Brazil, among others.
“With the DNP we are working on the implementation of this important Space Policy document, a sector in which, like the Oceans, we have the possibility of generating a significant economic impact for the country, creating new jobs and quality undertakings, but, in addition, , allows us to put Colombia on the international radar in a highly relevant issue such as space strategy”, said the vice president and chancellor.
During the signing of the agreement, the senior official was accompanied by the ambassador, Juan Carlos Pinzón, and the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Tito Crissien.

“In Colombia we have wonderful women scientists and researchers, who are already working at NASA and who are part of that purpose that I have been promoting, such as mobilizing our young women much more towards STEM careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and many more. Of course, we hope to have many more Colombians in these scientific missions at NASA, as well as open spaces with the business sector in everything related to the aerospace industry.”, pointed out the vice president and chancellor.
Colombia was added to the Artemisa Accords.
For his part, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Tito Crissien, stressed that the Artemisa agreements will allow the country not only to promote the development of space exploration, but to freely access information and technological developments made by the other nations of the program.
“In addition, with the adhesion of Colombia to these agreements, the recommendations made by the Mission of Wise Men in the focus of Basic and Space Sciences are promoted, allowing the country to promote from the academy and the industry, the design and manufacture of space components for resume projects both in putting satellites into orbit and ground stations”, affirmed the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Tito José Crissien.

It is worth noting that Colombia advances the approval process by the Constitutional Court of the treaty on the principles that govern the activities of States in the exploration and use of outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies.
