The country’s retail sales volume increased 1% from February to March this year. This is the third consecutive increase in the indicator, which has accumulated gains of 1.6% in the first three months of the year, according to data from the Monthly Trade Survey (PMC), released today (10) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). .
Retail showed increases of 4% compared to March 2021, 1.3% in the year (compared to the same period last year) and 1.9% in the 12 months.
The 1% increase in the volume of sales from February to March was driven by six of the eight activities surveyed by the IBGE: computer and communication office equipment and supplies (13.9%), books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (4.7 %), other articles for personal and domestic use (3.4%), fuels and lubricants (0.4%), furniture and household appliances (0.2%) and fabrics, clothing and footwear (0.1%).
On the other hand, two activities fell in the period: supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-0.2%) and pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (-5.9%).

Extended retail, which also includes sales of vehicles and construction materials, grew 0.7% from February to March, with a 2.2% increase in the vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces sector. Building materials fell 0.1%.
Extended retail also had growth rates of 1.1% in the quarterly moving average and in the accumulated for the year, of 4.5% in the comparison with March 2021 and of 4.4% in the accumulated of 12 months.

Nominal retail revenue rose in all types of comparison: compared to February this year (2.9%), compared to March 2021 (18.1%), year-to-date (14.5%) and accumulated over 12 months (15%).
The same happened with the expanded retail nominal revenue, which increased by 0.4% compared to February, 19.3% compared to March last year, 15.3% in the year and 18, 6% over 12 months.
