Cuba: news about an alleged gas leak in Havana is denied

The Civil Defense of Cuba denied this Tuesday a news spread through social networks about an alleged gas leak in Havana, a few days after the tragic explosion in the Saratoga hotel.

In a brief alert transmitted through his Twitter profile, and replicated by Cuban News Agency (ACN)the agency asserted that “unscrupulous people” were spreading the “fake news” of the event.

The official denial offers no further explanations or details, despite the fact that people from various areas of the Cuban capital claim to have smelled “a strong smell of gas” in recent days, according to independent media and publications on social networks.

A text of The touch refers that after residents in Havana reported having felt that smell between Monday night and Tuesday morning, the media outlet inquired about the issue with state entities. In this regard, he assures that, through a call to the emergency number of the Fire Department, he was able to confirm that this Monday maintenance work had been carried out at the Melones Gas Plant, in the Havana municipality of Old Havana.

In addition, it affirms that this information was also confirmed by telephone by the Manufactured Gas Company, whose specialists explained that in said plant “they had modified the level of odorization” of the gas produced there.

With these elements, the publication points out that “the smell perceived in several municipalities of the capital may also be due to the work at the Melons Plant” and that the specialists consulted acknowledge that the reason “does not have to be a gas leak ( like the one referred to) in the networks».

Neither the Civil Defense nor other state entities had properly confirmed this information.

These concerns and rumors about an alleged gas leak emerge a few days after the explosion that occurred in the Saratoga hotelwhich so far has left a balance of 42 dead and almost a hundred people affected.

Although the reasons for the event still are investigatedthe preliminary collection of data points to a gas leak at the time that a tanker truck was filling the hotel’s tanks, as the main cause of the accident that until now is being handled by experts and authorities in the country.
