Defense Minister Edmundo Novillo announced Tuesday that surprise operations will be carried out to seize undocumented cars that are marketed irregularly.
“In these places where undocumented vehicles or so-called ‘chuto’ cars are being sold, we are going to carry out a surprise operation to seize these undocumented vehicles,” Novillo warned at a press conference.
“We are warning ourselves that there are some places where action is needed, both from Customs as well as from the Vice Ministry and our Armed Forces, and we are going to do it with a plan that is going to be surprising,” the authority said.

The so-called “surprise operation” was activated in the framework of a report by a Chilean media outlet that exposed the trafficking of stolen vehicles in the neighboring country, with links to members of the Bolivian Police.
Government seizes Bs 205.3 million in contraband in the first quarter of 2022
The government recorded a total of 205.3 million Bolivians in seizures of contraband, during the first four months of 2022. National authorities affirm that the amount represents an increase of 32.8% in relation to the same interval in the previous administration.
“Note that in the first quarter of 2022, 205.3 million Bolivians have been monetized in different merchandise that is seized due to illegal smuggling activity, which has meant a percentage increase in value of 32.8% with respect to the management 2021”, indicated the Minister of Economy, Marcelo Montenegro at a press conference.
The authority of the state portfolio pointed out that 3,477 operations against smuggling were carried out at the national level, “which represents 49.7% more than they would be in the 2021 administration.”

Of the confiscated merchandise, a total of 126 million Bolivians was collected in automobiles (904 vehicles), 11 million in appliances and electrical material; 8.5 million in other textile and clothing items, and 6.9 million in seeds.
In addition, five million in beverages, alcoholic liquids and vinegars were seized; 4.7 million in aircraft and space vehicles, 4.1 million in garments and clothing accessories, 3.6 million in oils and resins and others for the production of perfumes.
On the other hand, 3.4 million were seized in garments and clothing accessories; 3.2 million in machines and mechanical devices and 28.4 million bolivianos in others.
