Cuban-American historian Ada Ferrer wins Pulitzer Prize

Cuban-American historian Ada Ferrer won the Pulitzer Prize for the best history book published in 2021 this Monday thanks to her work Cuba: An American Historywhich reviews the island history from the arrival of the Spanish conquerors to contemporary times.

On this occasion, the award in this category was awarded jointly, as Nicole Eustace also deserved it for her book Covered with Night: A Story of Murder and Indigenous Justice in Early America (Covered at Night: A History of Murder and Indigenous Justice in Early America)according to a note of the DPA agency published on the Spanish website of the DW channel.

According to that medium, the winners of the 106th edition of the Pulitzer Prizes were announced in a live broadcast from New York by the former journalist of the AP agency, Marjorie Miller, who last April assumed the position of administrator of the prestigious award. .

DPA specifies that Ada Ferrer, professor of History and Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of New Yorkhad previously been recognized for this work, which received the award given by the Los Angeles Times for the best history book.

Upon hearing the news, the prestigious intellectual wrote the phrase “Without words” on her Twitter account, accompanying the entry that announced her as the winner in the section dedicated to historical texts.

Remember the note from the German television station that 14 of the 21 Pulitzer Prize categories are reserved for journalistic work, ranging from investigative stories to photographs and caricatures. However, the award also recognizes literary works (biography, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, history), as well as music and theater.

The winners of the coveted award are determined by a jury based at Columbia University in New York, which in this edition awarded a special mention to Ukrainian journalists “for their courage, resistance and commitment” during the war generated for Russia’s invasion of its territory.

Teams, journalists and photographers of the New York Times, Miami Herald, Tampa Bay Times, Quanta Magazine, Chicago Tribune, The Atlantic, The Kansas City Star, Houston Chronicle, Insider, Los Angeles Times, Getty Images, Reuters, Futuro Media and PRX, TI have Washington Postamong others, were awarded in this edition of the prestigious journalism awards, says the German agency.

Last year, the Pulitzers awarded, especially, the coverage of various US media on the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and the protests against racism and police brutality, after the death of the African-American George Floyd, the publication limits.

Born in Havana in 1962, Ada Ferrer is the author, among others, of the books Insurgent Cuba: Race, Nation, and Revolution, 1868-98 YFreedom’s Mirror: Cuba and Haiti in the Age of Revolution.
