About the meeting, Senator Jose Garcia Ruminotindicated that “the country needs and, particularly the southern regions, affected by violence and terrorism (…) we have asked you to assume it with greater decision, greater conviction”, specifying that “we feel that senior government officials justify violence, they do not reject it with the force that the situation warrants”.
In addition, he specified that they asked the president “not to talk about political prisoners, because there are no political prisoners in Chile.”
“The people who are provisionally detained or sentenced, it is for serious crimes, extraordinarily serious (…) we have told him for that, with the greatest energy, no more declarations of political prisoners nor more justifications through the Gendarmerie delivering prison benefits to people who are condemned for the death of older adults in the most horrendous way,” he stressed.
In García’s opinion, with this type of signals, impunity is being favored.
Meanwhile, the president of the party and senator, Francisco Chahuanrequested “to end the contradictory signals, it is not possible to promote an impunity agenda and, on the other hand, ask us to agree to an agreement for security.”
“That is why it is so important that the President assumes the responsibility of governing and that he takes responsibility for the acts of violence that are taking place today in the Araucanía region and the Biobío region without the State implementing all the measures that today available as the constitutional State of Exception,” he added.
When detailing the proposals, he explained that from RN they have the availability “to be able to establish and generate the necessary majorities to approve the bills that help the communities.”
“There has to be coherence here, to put an end to those contradictory messages that seek to generate a culture of impunity,” he concluded.
