Unamos assures that Ortega “is the enemy of civil society”

Cenidh denounces the illegalization of 25 NGOs: "It is a direct attack on the right to defend human rights"

From December 2018 to date, the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo has outlawed 212 non-governmental organizations, denounced the political organization Unión Democrática Renovadora (Unamos).

“Orteguismo is the enemy of civil society! There are already 212 illegal non-profit organizations. Among them there are organizations that run education and human rights programs, as well as social clubs and professional associations », indicated the political structure on his Twitter account.

Unamos, (formerly the Sandinista Renovation Movement) and that in 2008 its legal personality was canceled, pointed out that the onslaught of the Ortega dictatorship is “materializing its excessive and irrational hatred towards civil society.”

In interview with Article 66, Héctor Mairena, member of the Political Council of the Blue and White National Unity (Unab) and leader of Unamos, said that since 2018, the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship has begun a process of eliminating any form of independent social and political organization.

“In this logic, in 2018 and 2019 the illegalization began by stripping the legal personality of several civil society organizations and to date it already exceeds 200 organizations,” Mairena stressed.

He recalled that the dispossession of the legal personality of the majority of the NGO has been through the Foreign Agents Law, approved in the last quarter of 2020.

«The dictatorship reflects its totalitarian will»

For the also political analyst, the Ortega dictatorship is reflecting “his totalitarian will, his authoritarian decision to control everything and eliminate everything that is independent.”

He also explained that the same action with NGOs, the Nicaraguan regime has done with opposition political parties, stripping them of their legal personality.

“In the case of the MRS (now Unamos), it was stripped of its legal personality —in 2008—, but we must remember that last year, the regime stripped the Citizens for Freedom (CxL) party of its legal personality, Conservative and the PRD (Democratic Restoration).

Mairena emphasized that the Government of Nicaragua can continue to outlaw other non-governmental organizations. “The dictatorship is on a suicidal path, although they —Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo— know that they have no way out because they are repudiated at the international and national levels, they are going to continue launching repressive blows against the different forms of independent organization.”

The opponent concluded that non-governmental organizations are necessary in a democratic society “because they fill empty spaces where the State cannot reach”, so he has no doubt that when Daniel Ortega leaves the dictatorship all the remains of legal personalities will remain. without effect and the State must return their property.

Recently, the steamroller of Sandinista deputies in the National Assembly outlawed 50 non-governmental organizations in one fell swoop under the excuse that they have broken the law by not submitting their reports in a timely manner.

To date, universities, scientific research centers, feminist organizations, human rights organizations, children’s homes, among others, have been left without legal status.
