The Ombudsman, Eduardo Leblanc, revealed that he opened an investigation for violation of human rights, as a result of the disappearances of women that have been reported to the authorities.
He specified that he is working with the National Police and other security forces to purge the list of women and missing persons, cases that, he said, could be linked to criminal acts, such as sex trafficking.
The official explained that he maintains contact with international organizations about the disappearances reported by the authorities, in order to determine if they are related to criminal activities.
Leblanc highlighted that in the province of Chiriquí, where there are recent reports of three missing persons, personnel from the Ombudsman’s Office have been deployed to obtain data on the circumstances in which they occurred.
He reported that 34 cases of possible trafficking related to migrants who have crossed the country have been detected, but recalled that it is necessary to conclude the investigations before establishing with certainty what happened.
