Sunedu: Which congressmen are related to universities without licensing?

On the last Wednesday, May 4, the plenary session of the Congress approved by majority the bill that recomposes the Board of Directors of the National Superintendence of Higher University Education (Sunedu), an initiative that puts its institutionality at risk.

The legislative proposal of the Education Commission, which is chaired by congressman Esdras Medina, obtained the vote of 68 parliamentarians from the Renovación Popular, Avanza País, Fuerza Popular, Perú Libre and Acción Popular, as well as those not grouped in We can Peru. While 39 showed their rejection and five abstained.

Before being approved, the controversial bill already had the support of a group of congressmenin which there are parliamentarians related to universities without licensing.

Congressmen with corporate ties in universities without licensing

One of the congressmen who was questioned for his ties to a university without a license is Roselli Amuruz. The parliamentarian of Avanza País, who has voted in favor of the aforementioned bill, is vice president of the board of directors of the Amazon Polytechnic University, in Amazonas. The Sunedu discredited the study center, in 2020.

Although José Luna Gálvez did not register attendance at the time of the vote, the legislator of Podemos Peru is the owner of the Telesup University, another institution that did not receive the endorsement of the supervisory body for having half-built offices, among other points. The congressman has been one of the promoters of the university counter-reform.

Another higher education entrepreneur is José Elías Ávalos, also from Podemos Peru. The legislator is the owner of the San Juan Bautista University, which also failed to obtain the approval of Sunedu. The study center was denounced for operating on the second floor of a shopping center in Lima.

A similar situation occurs with the Fujimorista David Jiménez. The parliamentarian of Fuerza Popular is president of the Board of Shareholders of the Universidad Privada de Huancayo Franklin Roosevelt, an institution that did not obtain permission to modify its institutional license from Suneduwith which it seeks to open another headquarters and expand the number of professional careers.
