A Venezuelan identified as Joel Fernández was shot dead in the yard of his home, located in Mc Bean Village across from Old Mac, in Trinidad and Tobago when gunmen got out of a black Audi and opened fire on him.
Police say Fernandez died at the scene last Saturday around 8 p.m. and that the men in the Audi followed Fernandez’s vehicle, waiting for the right moment to kill him, reports Trinidad and Tobago’s Guardian newspaper.
Two of Fernandez’s friends who came to the scene were too distraught to speak, but say they are very sad and shocked by the news.
“We don’t know why they killed him but he worked very hard here in Trinidad. This is terrible. Sad. Very sad. I am shocked, ”says Fernández’s friend, who did not want to reveal his name.
Police say Fernandez, along with a woman, were well known in the area, selling brand-name sneakers and slippers under a mango tree across from Savannah along Old Southern Main Road, Mc Bean Village.
Neighbors who wish to remain silent say they are “quite shocked” by the incident.
A neighbor who asks for strict anonymity says: “There is usually a small quiet residential area here. We are really shocked to hear what happened to the Spanish man. Things are very bad in this country.”
A police source alleges that some Venezuelan citizens are being persecuted by their enemies from Venezuela to Trinidad and, according to the source, are “dealing with them”.
However, investigating police officers have yet to determine a motive for Fernandez’s murder.
