The tragic story of the Leonese announcer
According to Radio Darío —where Rojas worked for several years—, the broadcaster left Nicaragua to take refuge in the North American country due to threats from supporters of the Daniel Ortega regime.
In a letter, which according to the radio station the announcer shared with them, Rojas narrated his journey to protect his life and not starve. “One day I was heading home after coming from one of the roadblocks and they threatened me with death that if I continued like this they would make me and my family disappear.”

In Honduras, Calixto Rojas recounted that he had to go through a number of difficult situations, “like sleeping on the floor, going hungry, while keeping the money he brought, which wasn’t much.”
Then he went through El Salvador, Guatemala and Belize, in that last country he went through a lot of “suffering”, as he described, He had to carry vegetables, clean riverbeds, until he managed to work on a radio as an announcer for a salary of 12 dollars a day.
“I no longer had to carry vegetables to the market. Then it has not been easy, with little salary I decided to continue to Mexico, moving to Chetumal, Quintana Roo, where I have also gone through difficult situations, just like the previous ones », he narrated.
