The governor of La Paz, Santos Quispe, warned that the department could lose a seat in the 2022 population and housing census that will take place in November. He indicated that the scenario could occur due to the border conflict with Oruro. He assured that this representation in Parliament could benefit Santa Cruz.
“The damage to La Paz would be to lose a seat that will go to Santa Cruz (…) We do not know how much of the exact population there is in La Paz and according to that population our resources will increase,” said the authority.
This problem arose after the Government of Oruro announced the abrogation of Law 1466, for the Creation of the Canton of Panduro, which is located in the municipality of Sica Sica in the province of Aroma. With this measure, that population would pass to Oruro territory.
“We asked for an audience with the Minister of Autonomies, but until now he has not given us that answer. We sent letters, but we had no answers; we want to solve the problem”, affirmed the Governor.
The authority added that they will not allow them to remove a territory from the department of La Paz. “We want to sit down with the Governor of Oruro to fix the problem once and for all. This is a conflict that we have been dragging on for 50 years,” he stated.
The Deputy Minister of Autonomies, Álvaro Ruiz, said that “there is no conflict of limits.” “The place where the conflicts are is Lequepampa, but Law 1466 of 1993 establishes precise limits. The conflicts are due to a lack of sanitation of the land. There are people in Lequepampa who want that territory to belong to Oruro, others (prefer) La Paz”.
