The President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, expressed his willingness to discuss the extension of his mandate in the Constitutional Convention. This, after the proposal presented by the right-wing conventional, Marcela Cubillos in the drafting body.
“It seems to me that the duration of the current presidential term and the authorities of the Executive Branch should be incorporated into the Executive Power, because it also changes substantially, the Presidency changes substantially in its powers compared to what it has today,” said the former minister of Education.
“The cabinet changes, the ministers change, not only the issue of incorporating ministers from indigenous peoples, but also the powers of the President of the Republic completely change, the entire system changes,” he added.
Given this, and in conversation with Pole Radius of Punta Arenas, the President commented “let it be discussed, I have no problem, that is going to be discussed in the transitory regulations. I did not come here to cling to power at any cost. What interests me is that this process of changes goes well and that will be defined by the constituents in the transitory norms”.
“I think it is unnecessary to fall into provocations of this type, which only seek to raise controversy and raise the voice of the disagreements,” he added.
The president recalled that “there is a majority consensus in Chilean society that the 1980 Constitution is out of date, and I hope that we can resolve that on September 4 in the Plebiscite that we are going to have when we have the final text, people can understand the changes positive that a new Constitution would bring”.
“But the two alternatives are legitimate and I am going to respect, by the way, the results proposed by the people of Chile,” he added, along with expressing his hope that “on September 4 we will have a moment of encounter among Chileans to advance together in the future and not of division,” he concluded.
