Havana Cuba. – The label “ElonBuyCuba” became a trend on Twitter and possibly translates the wishes of hundreds of thousands of Cuban men and women who, tired of so many years of dictatorship, but still hoping for a change, imagine the most desperate and fanciful solutions to what that seems to have no solution, or at least an unequivocal beginning of the end.
Tired, imaginative and hopeful although, apparently, not willing to put their feet on the ground, or rather, in the streets because —it is shameful to accept it—, in Cuba almost all of us suffer and hate repression but few have the courage to face it here, now and until the last consequences.
However, and although ironically, the label “ElonBuyCuba” would bet on what, although it seems absurd, would be more likely to bring about a change in the system, taking into account that it has been the avidity of the communists for “easy money” and the “royalties”, by virtue of the obsession to retain power eternally, which has achieved that, at least in economic matters, there have been some “flexibilizations”, although only those necessary to attract foreign capital by concealing the putrid smell that exhale this dinosaur corpse from the Soviet era.
If it weren’t for the fact that the proposal to Elon Musk, despite its brevity, mainly contains and evokes, among other terrible realities, the condition of subjugation in which millions of people on the Island find themselves, as well as their mental scheme where a political change can only be achieved from the outside and with a lot of money, it would seem like one more joke about Cuba and the dictatorship it has suffered for more than half a century. We could even laugh out loud imagining the thousands of strange, absurd, possible and impossible situations that would happen if the claim became a reality because, selling the land, its occupants would also be for sale, mostly a population easy to herd like cattle ( that is somewhat in our favor as merchandise) but at the same time aged, retired, hungry, remitted and decimated by the escapes of the youngest, in short, a slave endowment that, in practical matters, would not be worth much more than the space impoverished where he lives.
What could interest Elon Musk from a country that produces little or nothing important and from which people run away (or dream of escaping) as if it were hell itself? What would be our current “market value” with land that does not provide food or hands that make them produce, with obsolete technologies and mentalities, with road infrastructure and basic services in terrible condition, without true enterprises and entrepreneurs, without essential freedoms to unleash creativity and cultivate individual and collective virtues? As we are now, and as we will be shortly if the exodus of Cuban men and women continues, buying Cuba is like buying a rock in the middle of the sea.
Unless it is intended to acquire the Island as an antique for collection or in a fit of compassion, charity, for those who await a miracle, whoever takes a risk and intends to recover and make the investment produce at some point would not only have to prepare to start from below zero, rebuild from the ground up or, rather, melt new ones, but also, and perhaps the most difficult thing – if he really did it to help us and help himself at the same time – he would be forced to heal open wounds and erase the traumas and bad habits of the past, restore our self-confidence, then only in this way would we begin —possibly a century after “bought”— to be a great country from which no one would think of leaving, to which everyone would want to return and to which nobody would think of putting it up for sale, again, not even for a joke.
But neither Elon Musk will ever buy the Island in order to change what we are obliged to change from within (by dint of constant demands and pressure, with no other resources than the will to bequeath our children a better country) nor the label, although Its creators have proposed it, it could be accepted only as a joke, a “fuck”, because it is a very serious message, especially when it refers to what is undoubtedly a tragic economic-political context, which has no comparison with other realities of the planet, despite the fact that the communist regime and its defenders make an effort to sell to the world (those who know little or nothing about Cuba or communism, which is our main cause of ruin) a “normality” that neither it does not even exist for the military elite in power, even when they claim it.
A tragic context, without a doubt, but also preposterous for which no one with a little sanity would risk a penny, bearing in mind that 60 years of failed policies, exacerbated egos, ideological stubbornness, bureaucracy and corruption have left Cuba as decrepit cow
But “ElonBuyCuba” is just that, one more label, although at the same time a “joke” that, more than the desire to find a solution —whatever it is—, reveals our immobility, our conformism, our resignation, our lack of confidence. in us as the only ones with the real capacity to change things.
And I am grateful that it is just that, one more label among so many that soon become extinct before the new ones that are becoming a trend in cyberspace, because perhaps it is among those that best translate that harmful feeling of impossibility, of exhaustion of the resources, from the weariness that at times invades those of us who remain, either inside or outside, “connected” for years with that deep Cuba that hurts us so much.
