MIAMI, United States. — The situation of the protesters of the anti-government protests of July 11, 2021 (11J) in La Güinera was the subject of the last episode of the podcast the damned.
One of the young people from that Havana neighborhood who was a victim of Castro’s retaliation was Elier Padrón Romero, barely 25 years old and a native of the municipality of Arroyo Naranjo, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Noraidi Romero Alarcón, Elier’s mother, assured that her son’s only crime was recording the 11J demonstration and shouting “Homeland and Life”, “Change” and “Freedom”.
After going through different police and penal institutions, including the Valle Grande prison, the protester is being held in the Combinado del Este. His mother describes him as a quiet young man, attached to his house and dedicated to his work.
According to the mother CubaNet, the young man has spent most of his time in punishment cells, isolated for shouting “Homeland and Life”. On occasion, they have also kept him without food.
In principle, the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Havana requested 18 years in prison for Padrón, which would later be changed to 20. Finally, the sanction was set at 15 years.
Sentences between 20 and 30 years
The Cuban regime issued sentences against a total of 128 protesters of the anti-government protests of July 11 and 12, 2021 in the Toyo Corner, in the municipality of Diez de Octubre, and in the La Güinera neighborhood, municipality of Arroyo Naranjo.
