World number one Novak Djokovic se has qualified for the quarterfinals of the Madrid Tournament without playing, after the withdrawal of the British Andy Murray before his round of 16 match scheduled for this Thursday.
“Unfortunately, Andy Murray, ill, is not in a position” to play, wrote the organizers of the Madrid Masters 1000.
Djokovic and Murray had to meet for the first time for more than five years when they met in Doha in 2017.
The Scotsman, with a titanium hip since 2019 and who arrived in Madrid with a tournament wildcard, had just won his first two matches on clay for five years against Dominic Thiem and Denis Shapovalov to reach the round of 16.
In the quarterfinals, Djokovic will face the winner of the match between the Pole Hubert Hurkacz and Serbian Dusan Lajovic.
