The consultant on strategic sustainability issues and former Minister of Energy and MinesLuis Miguel Incháustegui, pointed out that Rimay, a platform for promoting dialogue and discussion around the mining sectorwould be a beneficial social consensus-seeking strategy for promoting mining in central regions of the Peru.
As part of his presentation on the first day of the decentralized event of Rumbo a PERUMIN Peru Central edition, which involves the regions of Junín, Lima provinces and Pasco, Incháustegui spoke about the importance of establishing consensus that promotes the full development of mining potential in Peru.
“Rimay means to agree in Quechua, and this was implemented with the aim of promoting dialogue to, first, build a vision of mining by 2030 and, second, reach consensus between civil society, mining companies and the Government,” said the former minister. , referring to the plan that was applied during his administration.
To do this, mentions Incháustegui, there are steps to comply with a social strategy that increases cooperation and decreases the level of conflict. This with the purpose of generating shared value based on dialogue and listening to the parties involved, development of sustainable plans and a multi-stakeholder approach.
However, the former Minem representative points out that widespread challenges persist in areas that have mining activity, such as social gaps; the management of the taxes collected (from the mining activity); the lack of collaboration between the State, companies and communities; the lags of environmental liabilities and illegal mining; and, finally, the slowness of processes for obtaining licenses and permits for the development of new projects.
“The key to creating shared value is to link the corporate return that results from social impact. It is necessary to convert the creation of a social impact, together with that of a business impact and innovation, into a virtuous circle”, concluded Incháustegui.
