During the day this Wednesday, a historic event was experienced in Congress. This, since the Senate ratified the appointment of the journalist and union leader, Rodrigo Cid Santos, as one of the seven members of the board of National Television (TVN), thus becoming the first worker in the history of the television signal to have the right to vote on the top floor of the state channel.
About a month ago, the government chose him as the person who would replace the quota left by the DC deputy, Ricardo Cifuentes, in March 2021, so in the first days of April, a letter was sent to the Upper House requesting the agreement of the parliamentarians to endorse his nomination.
That nomination was supported by a large majority, obtaining 39 votes in favor, 2 against and 6 abstentions, in a session that included Cid himself along with the government spokesperson, Camila Vallejo, who described the vote as “historic” and the agreement of the senators.
“Rodrigo Cid Santos is an irreproachable person, whose commitment to public television translates into a career spanning more than 20 years, a worker for the same channel, a person who for years – chosen by his colleagues – has been the voice, but not the vote at the TVN board of directors. Today, with this agreement, we are changing history”, he expressed.
“This is not just about a government nomination, but we also want to be the vehicle of the workers,” he added.
It should be noted that this agreement was not easy, since the journalist’s nomination arrived with a negative report to the Senate Chamber by the Education and Culture Committee of the Upper House, who warned of an alleged “inability” of the professional to assume the position.
Cid has been part of the TVN press area, and between 2013 and 2018, he was the president of the National Union No. 3 of the state channel. His arrival is given in conjunction with the appointment of the journalist Andrea Fresard as the new president of the board of directors of the television signal.
RATIFIED IN THE SENATE! Today the TVN workers won. For the first time in its 53-year history, they will be able to vote on its board of directors. A milestone that fills us with happiness, and that allows us to continue democratizing our public companies and spaces of power. pic.twitter.com/NODbCuWOwF
