AMLO: proposal to invite Venezuela and Cuba to the Summit of the Americas went to Biden, not to his undersecretary

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador asked not to anticipate that the governments of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela will not be invited to the Summit of the Americas in June in Washington, as stated by the US undersecretary, brian nichols.

López Obrador said that the request to invite these governments was made directly to the president of the United States, Joe Biden, so he downplayed Nichols’s statementin charge of the White House to manage relations with Latin America and the Caribbean.

The president stated that the Secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrardhas already traveled to Washington to hold agreement meetings prior to the June summit, and commissioned him to take the necessary diplomatic steps to ensure that all the governments of Latin America and the Caribbean are summoned. AMLO He said that on a previous occasion for that summit, the countries of the region had been fully invited.

“We must not get ahead of ourselves because, with all due respect, we made the proposal to President Biden. He mentioned to me that he was going to think about it, and yesterday Ebrard left for Washington, and I instructed him to discuss this in addition to the issues on the bilateral agenda. So, we have to wait, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

On Monday, Brian Nichols ruled out inviting the governments of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela to the Summit of the Americas, saying they “do not respect” democracy.

Cuba, Nicaragua and the regime of (Nicolás) Maduro do not respect the democratic charter of the Americas and therefore I do not expect their presence”, he stated.

He indicated that President Joe Biden “has been very clear that countries that do not respect democracy are not going to receive his invitation” to the summit.
